What’s for supper, Honey?

Meal plans are a mundane duty. House cleaning, and doing the dishes are all part of the daily chores we do. My poor wife, Anna, has to put up with my meager talents as a chef. She is not always up to cooking so we share responsibilities in the kitchen, as well as cleaning. As a family we are a team. We need certain things to get done to function as a family and function as a people of God. We need knowledge and shelter as well as food. King Midas couldn’t eat his gold. Moving on to our Gospel, we need Martha in our lives.

Deep waters cannot quench love, nor rivers sweep it away. Were one to offer all the wealth of his house for love, he would be utterly despised.

I am thinking about Spring and my garden and getting rid of things that I am sure I will want a month from now and how much I paid for it and that it is too expensive to throw out or give away. I am thinking about Martha and how she gets admonished by Jesus.

I do not feel that Jesus was putting, Martha down. I think He was emphasizing the importance of a relationship with Him and a balance between chores, work and prayer. Jesus as we sometimes forget was human and needed His diaper changed as a baby. As an adult He needed clean clothes and food.

Jesus was showing us the most important thing in life is not how much we own or how hard we work. It is how well we have listened to Him, as Mary did.

Our Saint of the day is Saint Scholastica, the sister of Saint Benedict. She founded a nunnery about 5 miles from her brother and adopted the rule of Saint Benedict, which said that routine prayer and routine purposeful works were the way to a serene life.

Some of Martha and some of Mary.

So as we go forward today and tomorrow, let us follow Saint Scholastica and her brother Saint Benedict into following the example of both Martha and Mary. This balance in life is the path to a more balanced spiritual state of mind.

God Love You Always

  1. Thank you Bob. Living a humble life leaves the door open for Jesus and his teachings to enter. We will always have time to make dinner and clean up. Do we have time for a few minutes with Jesus? Wonderful reflection. Peace to you my brother.

  2. Thank you, Bob. We need to find that balance between work, chores, and prayer. As we pray for peace in Ukraine, let us also pray for the salvation of the Ukrainian, NATO, and U.S. leadership and everything that they did and continue to do to put Ukraine and Europe in the situation that they are in.

  3. Your reflections are powerful in their simplicity, they always touch my soul. God bless you for always reminding us to pray for all of those suffering in our world.

  4. I love reading your reflections they’re so simplistic and a reminder that we all put one foot in front of the other. We’re all in this together and the prize is eternal happiness! ❣️🙏🏼

  5. Balance in life, or as philosophers sometimes call it the golden mean, is a worthy goal for us all. Thanks for reminding us to strive for balance in our lives.

Thanks to all readers who pray for those of us with cancer and please continue to pray for us.

As always a good weekend and Sabbath to all.
