In the first reading, Saint Paul tells us: “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” The Cross has always been a paradox. To the world, it appears as weakness, failure, and defeat. Yet for believers, it reveals God’s wisdom, love, and saving power. Through the Cross, Christ conquered sin and death not by force but by self-giving love.
Saint Justin understood this mystery. Living in a pagan culture that valued human wisdom and philosophy, he discovered in Christ a wisdom greater than all earthly knowledge. He courageously defended the Christian faith and ultimately gave his life for it. Many considered his beliefs foolish, but Justin recognized that true wisdom is found in the Crucified and Risen Lord.
In the Gospel, Jesus declares that He has not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them. God’s commandments are not burdens imposed upon us; they are expressions of His loving will. Jesus fulfills the law by revealing its deepest meaning: love of God and love of neighbor. He calls His disciples not merely to external obedience but to an interior transformation of the heart.
As we honor Saint Justin today, may Saint Justin intercede for us, that we may have the courage to embrace the wisdom of the Cross, remain faithful to Christ’s commandments, and bear witness to the Gospel with conviction and love.
