How does one pray the Our Father during mass?

A life long confusion I always had and still have… as a child it was on of the first prayers I learnt from my mother so I would fold my hands in prayer, bow my head and say it out aloud in Mass so I would feel like a participant of the Eucharistic celebration , prior to my profession of the sacrament of the Holy communion!

Over the years, as the charismatic movement took over my state church the preteen me noticed some elder women and men, raise their hands upwards spread apart and palms to the skies and pray the Lords prayer.. I was not sure why though! When I asked my mother , rolling her eyes she said ” Oh those charismatic people.. they want to show off they say prayers !” I assumed it was not the right way and stuck to my childhood methods and slowly shifting between languages as I attend mass in mother tongue, Konkani most of the time!

As a 20 something newly passed out medical graduate, I had the opportunity to attend a silent retreat at a nearby state during Lent and watched a new form of prayer, where the youth would raise their arms in air and face the palms towards the altar and say the prayer.. I was a fascinated by the newer version and since a friend adhered to it I asked him why, he responded ” I am asking Lord for HIs blessings and through the prayer I am connecting with the Lord by raising my arms. ” Well I wasnt convinced that the Lord, needed a double high five from us but nevertheless was amused!

I confess I sneakily tried to spread my hands in prayer when my mother was not around ( for fear of being judged and scolded) and prayed the Our Father and from my own research , concluded, it didnt make much difference rather I just felt more conscious of being stared at by others and was less attentive in prayer!

In praying, do not babble like the pagans,
who think that they will be heard because of their many words.
Do not be like them.
Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

There the answer is in the same passage! While I was brought up to believe that prayer should be silent and personal, I also felt very joyous singing at the top of my lungs during mass, especially when I knew the hymns ! It was and is probably the only time I dont feel awkward about singing in public!

Whatever form of prayer we adopt, it is our own connection with the Lord! while I stick to reading the gospel for the reflection, some do it daily.. My parents pray the rosary every evening prior to dinner never failing …. my dad attended every Thursday for the blessings of Padre Agnelo, a saint in the making from my state who my parents have undying faith in …. while rest of my state Catholics throng the southern part of my Country for a visit to the Church of our Lady , at Velankanni in state of Tamil nadu, so much so almost every house has a female child named in some version of the place in Goa!

Faith can make us do strange things… sing out in church or raise our hands in prayer or travel across borders to visit a certain shrine ! I think faith is what should guide us to be better persons – less judgemental, alot more loving and above all better humans especially in days of competition, bigotry , confusion about everything and constant need to conform with the world for fear of trolling or cancellation!

While I say this , I am not model citizen to give advice to all of you and have my flaws constantly reminding me of how I should not cringe when people feel the need to give their opinion on my reflections personally … or run away from any social interactions cause it comes down to the vicious cycle of questions and queries into my personal life and decisions! But instead just bow my head in prayer for blessings from the Lord… and say the prayer he taught us all… and focus on being a better human every day and each day!

PRAYER: (say the our father in your native tongue !)

  1. I agree with you, Analise. God doesn’t mind where your hands are when you pray, but only where your heart is.

  2. At the end, our Christian commitments will be assessed by how we love others. Especially ,those who are not in the same boat with us.
Thank you Analise for your down-to- earth reflection.

  3. Ama Namin (Our Father in Filipino)
Ama namin, sumasalangit ka, Sambahin ang ngalan mo
(Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name)
Mapasaamin ang kaharian mo, Sundin ang loob mo dito sa lupa, para ng sa langit
(Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as is it in Heaven)
Bigyan mo po kami ng aming kakanin sa araw araw
(Give us this day our daily bread)
At patawarin mo po kami sa aming sala para ng pagpapatawad namin sa mga nagkakasala
(Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us)
At huwag mo po kaming ipahintulot sa tukso At iadya mo po kami sa dilang masasama, amen
(And deliver us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, Amen)

  5. When we pray the “Our Father” it’s easy to just blow past the first two words of this glorious prayer and take for granted our Father’s awesomeness. Who in mind I was inspired by the Holy Spirit to express who “Our Father” really is to me and I’m sure He’s even more to others.

Our Father who art in heaven who created the universe (which in the eyes of man appears to be infinite, but per Isaiah 40:12, fits in the span of Your fingers) and all things in it, including the earth and its abundant resources that we need to live out our earthy existence (because You’re a God of abundant love),

Our Father who art in heaven who created us and has given us all the opportunity to pursue eternal life through Jesus,

Our Father who art in heaven who longs for us to turn to him and to establish a deep daily personal relationship with Him, Jesus and the Holy Spirit,

Our Father who art in heaven who gave us his only beloved son to show us the Way, the Truth and the Life that is in Him and then to ask Jesus to obediently and lovingly give himself up on the cross as the only possible perfect and unblemished sacrifice for the sins of the world.

Our Father who art in heaven who has blessed us with the gift of Your Holy Spirit and blesses us with Your Spirit’s seven gifts, when we ask for them in sincerity,

Our Father who art in heaven who loves us all unconditionally despite our sinful nature,

Our Father who art in heaven who never gives up on any of his children,

Our Father who art in heaven who showers us with abundant blessings every day (and through the shame of our ungratefulness) we don’t even notice,

Our Father who art in heaven who punishes us out of His loving kindness to help save us, to keep us on the narrow path that will take us to the narrow gate,

Our Father who art in heaven who purifies our hearts and minds through daily trials and tribulations so we can glorify him through our response to these trials,

Our Father who art in heaven who is loving, kind, patient, forgiving and generous,

Our Father who art in heaven who loves us so much he lets us decide whether we want to love Him back,

Our Father who art in heaven who is just, compassionate and merciful,

Who art in heaven, (I can’t even begin to imagine how wonderful heaven will be!)

    Holy is Your name

Your kingdom will come to be on the new earth as it is in heaven,

Please provide for us today our daily physical and spiritual needs,

And please forgive us for our sinfulness as we forgive those who sin against us, who hate us and mock us for our faith, who try to deceive us (because they themselves have already been deceived), and who physically and mentally harm us,

And please help us to avoid all temptations and deliver us from the evil one,

For You are all powerful and glory and majesty is with You forever and ever.

  6. Thank you for all the versions of the Our Father. It’s beautiful. It reminds me of Chris Tomlin’s song “How Great is our God” WORLD version- different languages combined. Check it out… It’s awesome!

  7. Dear Analise,
Thank you for your time and effort writing your reflection.
You cracked me up when you wrote:
” I am not model citizen to give advice to all of you and have my flaws constantly reminding me of how I should not cringe when people feel the need to give their opinion on my reflections personally”.
You are so beautifully flawed like the rest of us.
    Peace be with you.

  8. Thank you Analise, another heartfelt reflection from you.I always appreciate your honesty.
One thing I always focus on from The Lord’s Prayer are the first two words, which means that we are his beloved children. How wonderful that we can place our trust in his loving embrace. He always loves us,no matter that we’re not perfect and that we humans often get it so wrong.Peace be with you,Analise.
