Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of all America. The appearance of Our Blessed Mother to Juan Diego, a poor Indian as he was on his way to daily Mass is something special.

Our Lady spoke to Juan Diego in his own language, dressed like an indigenous maiden, an Aztec princess. She recruited an indigenous native to proclaim her message.

Sometimes that there some people who think that they have the monopoly of God. Nonetheless, God comes to us as we are. He will speak to us in the language we can are familiar with. Nobody or people have monopoly of God.

We recall John the Baptist confronting the Sadducees and Pharisees for thinking that they are entitled to the Kingdom of God simply because they were Jewish. Sadducees and Pharisees thought that they had a right to salvation simply because they were sons of Abraham, Hebrews. John says “God can raise up sons for Abraham from these rocks. Stop making presumptions. John even called the Sadducees and Pharisees a brood of vipers for such behaviors

Mary’s appearance to Juan Diego is a powerful reminder that God accept all peoples. Saint Peter even came to that realization after many years, after Pentecost. “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all” (Act 10:35)

Jesus gave you and I the same mandate give gave to the apostle “Go and make disciples of all nations.”

We need to put our preconceptions to one side. Jesus continues to remind of us of the purpose of his mission: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick, Go and learn who it means, I desire mercy and not sacrifice, I came to call not to call the righteous but sinners.”

May we never forget!

Have a blessed week
