Monday of the 17th Week of Ordinary Time: Cling to Me

In today’s first reading, God gives Jeremiah a strange instruction: wear a linen loincloth, then hide it near the Euphrates. When Jeremiah returns later, the garment is ruined and “good for nothing.”

What does this mean?

God explains that the linen garment represents His people. Just as the garment was meant to cling closely to the one wearing it, Israel was meant to cling to God. He chose them to be His people, His glory, and a witness to the nations. God’s deepest desire was not simply that they obey laws, but that they live in a close relationship with Him.

But that relationship was broken. Why? Jeremiah gives the answer: “They walked in the stubbornness of their hearts” and “they did not listen.”

A stubborn heart refuses God’s guidance. It prefers its own way. Once we stop listening to God, other things begin to take His place—success, money, pleasure, pride, or our own opinions. These become the idols that slowly pull us away from Him.

Today’s reading invites us to ask ourselves: What am I clinging to? Am I holding on to Christ, or have I become attached to something else?

The Lord still desires us to remain close to Him. Every time we pray, listen to His Word, receive the Eucharist, and turn back to Him in repentance, we renew that closeness.

May we ask the Lord today for hearts that are not stubborn but open, hearts that truly listen, and hearts that cling to Him above all else. Amen

Have a Wonderful Week

  1. Thank you Father Peter. You provided much to ponder and in particular, ” our own opinions” can prevent us from listening to God.
My goodness how we are bombarded with opinions.
Also, I’m drawn to : “Today’s reading invites us to ask ourselves: What am I clinging to? ”
As I am pondering a major life shift from 40 years of full time work to part time or full retirement, I need to ask myself what am I clinging to?

  4. Thank you Father Peter, It certainly is a process to not cling to anything ( family, belongings, opinions etc.) but God. I pray daily to only do His Will, not mine.

  5. I still can’t believe this is real, but I actually won the lottery jackpot! It feels like a dream come true. For years, I would occasionally play without expecting much, just hoping that one day luck would finally be on my side—and it finally happened when I came across a testimony on how Dr Benjamin the great spell caster had helped alot of people win, so I reached out to him, he told me what to do and I followed his instructions, after 48 hours he gave some numbers to play, I did played the numbers as instructed.

The moment I checked my numbers and realized they all matched, my heart started racing. I had to double-check multiple times because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Winning the Powerball jackpot of $107,000,000,00. This has completely changed my life. It’s given me financial freedom, peace of mind, and the opportunity to support my family and invest in my future. Here are his contact information.
