Friday October 6th in Ordinary Time

Listen!

When I was in the military, I was in the artillery, and I loved the loud 60’s Rock and Roll Music. Needless to say, I have a hearing loss. My wife, Anna, says it is selective. We both have been tested and both of us have a high frequency hearing loss. We both have hearing aids but don’t wear them.

We both know we should be wearing hearing aids.

One of my favorite quotes , Sirach 15: 14-20 God in the beginning created human beings and made them subject to their own free choice. If you choose, you can keep the commandments; loyalty is doing the will of God. Set before you are fire and water; to whatever you choose, stretch out your hand. Before everyone are life and death, whichever they choose will be given them. Immense is the wisdom of the LORD; mighty in power, he sees all things. The eyes of God behold his works, and he understands every human deed. He never commands anyone to sin, nor shows leniency toward deceivers.

We can wear the hearing aids or not.

In Exodus 20 God says He is a jealous God. God is not imperfect. He gave us the 10 Commandments because He loves us. He knows what it takes to be in Communion with Him. Nonetheless, we have the choice. He knows loyalty is doing the will of God. This brings to mind the will of God for me.

So we not only have to follow the will of God, the commandments and love one another in the same breath. We have to balance all these things to satisfy a jealous God.

God doesn’t want the impossible, because He sent His Son, Jesús ‘Anyone who listens to you listens to me; anyone who rejects you rejects me, and those who reject me reject the one who sent me.’ The impossible occurs with a relationship with Jesus. No one wants to willingly reject Jesus. We want Him as a brother, confidant and friend.

There are many paths to that relationship but they all surround and are strengthened by the Holy Eucharist and Scripture. Our walk with Jesus is improved by participating and prayerfully using the grace of Jesus in our lives. Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

God Love You Always

  1. Thank you Bob. Listening and hearing to you and others at the Catholic moment brings the words and works of Jesus closer to all of us. Peace with you my brother.

  2. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” That phrase is a decal above our patio door. It was there when we moved in, but I fail to pay enough attention to it. My free will allows me to sin over and over. I need to learn, to choose to accept the strength that Christ offers. I need to turn up my spiritual hearing aids!

  3. Bob: 2 months ago I obtained hearing aids (like you high frequency loss). When I first acquired them I was awe struck as I stood still in the street listening to bird song. It is folly not to use them. God created the scientists who engineered them to benefit us. Do not be stubborn. Make it a habit every morning to out them on and experience the joy of God’s world.
