Friday, June 28, 2019 – Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

I am sometimes mystified by the readings of Old and New Testament on how they mesh and substanciate each other. Our readings today could be read on any Good Shepherd theme and are uncannily similar. They give us a insight into the mind of God. It is obvious why the Holy Mother Church choose these readings today, not for the Good Shepherd but for the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart was attributed to apparitions of a French nun, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, in 1675. However, devotions to the Sacred Heart started much earlier after the crusades in Benedictine and Cistercian Monasteries in the 11th century AD.

Our readings today start in Ezekiel 34 : “The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy, shepherding them rightly.” Ezekiel is speaking of God’s desire to heal us and bind up our wounds. Our society is hurting and the good Lord is yearning for us to come to Him. He created us in His own image. We are His children, but we are all so arrogant that we think that we can fix things ourselves.

In the second reading from Romans 5, “but God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.”  God has shown us how much He loves us and proves it every day. The pierced Sacred Heart of Jesus is the eager symbol of that yearning for God to be one with us. The only thing stopping that union is us.

I look at myself here and wonder how I can get myself out of the way of Jesus’s love for me. The last time I received the Sacrament of Reconciliation was during Lent. Yes, I have moved, and my bride and I are getting settled and there are tons of other excuses. The whole problem is they are excuses.

The words of the priest are simple, “your sins are forgiven, go and sin no more.” The words of Jesus are simple [Luke 15] “there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.”

Spread that joy in Heaven and experience Jesus love for you today. Jesus Sacred Heart is beating for you now.

God Bless

  1. Lovely reflection Bob. It seems me, try to fix problems by myself. I realise its impossible w/o God guidance. ❤

  2. The Scared Heart of Jesus waits for us to come, repentance and reconciliation renew and refresh us. So uplifting its hard to describe. What a beautiful Sacrament offered straight from the heart. Blessings Mr Bob.

  3. Thank you for the explanation concerning “the sleek and strong I will destroy”…. that it is their arrogance or lack of asking God to shepherd them (vs just because they’re sleek and strong). Prayers for you all.

  4. Bob, I once heard a priest say “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”.
Thank you for your reflection and keep up the good writing.

  5. The Promises of the Sacred Heart to St Mary Margaret Alacoque

It is said that Jesus promised these things to his followers who say the devotion to the sacred heart of Jesus. Pray with love and yo will be given these things.

-I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life.

-I will give peace in their families.

-I will console them in all their troubles.

-I will be their refuge in life and especially in death.

-I will abundantly bless all their undertakings.

-Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.

    -Tepid souls shall become fervent.

-Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection.

-I will bless those places wherein the image of My Sacred Heart shall be exposed and venerated.

-I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts.

-Persons who propagate this devotion shall have their names eternally written in my Heart.

-In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.

Though these things are promised, when you say the prayer to the sacred heart, it is wise to have your needs in the front of your mind. Are you in need of healing (from grief, emotional, spiritual, psychological), or financial help? Do you require strength to get through a particularly trying period?

Just always remember that Jesus died for our sins. His suffering is our salvation.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.
    ????????????
    Blessings
