Being a Christian is not Easy!

My niece’s boyfriend, Rey, died suddenly this week. He was only 52 years old. He was a 100% Disabled Marine Corp Veteran. He was also abusive and manipulative. I did not like him. Nonetheless, my wife, Anna, and I tried to consol my niece the best we could. They have an 8-year-old child (my great nephew) who is a happy well-adjusted little boy. We will continue to support my nephew and her as best we can. We are also praying for Rey’s soul.

Some people would say that it couldn’t happen to a better person, but that would not be the Christian that Jesus wants us to be. It is not our place to judge. I am not sure Jesus likes everyone all the time including me when I sin. Yet Jesus heals indiscriminately everyone who asks. Another words, Jesus can heal us without totally liking us. In our reading’s today Jesus knew the paralytic was a sinner.  Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, ‘My child, your sins are forgiven.’ That is a beautiful start to a healing.

This passage speaks to me in the following way. The people of faith who opened the roof must have loved the paralytic a great deal. It was not the faith of the paralytic but that of the people who brought him to Jesus that caused Jesus to first forgive and then heal him. This is where we as a people of faith come into the picture.

Jesus may not always like us, but the prayers and faith of family and friends can motivate Him to perform miracles. We may not like some of the people we pray for. They are “lost sheep” in your life. If you don’t pray and intercede with your faith, what chance do they have of getting healed. Those sheep need our constant prayers and the strength of our faith as a group to change their life. The Gospel says, don’t give up on them. Philippians 4:13 I can do all thing through Christ who strengthens me.

There is a side benefit that is not quite so obvious. We benefit from the healing as well. We lose baggage that we have no need to carry.

God Love You Always

  1. Bob, great reflection. Thank you for opening my eyes to the people who brought the paralytic to Jesus…never really thought about them…but it was through their faith and action that he was healed….faith and action…..you need both. Bob, it is a blessing to have you write for ACM. Thank you.

  2. Thank you Bob. Your faith and honesty shine through this reflection. We do have people in our lives that are not our favorites. Nonetheless that should not divert our faithful principals. Praying for the ones that persecute us can be difficult. We will pray for Reys soul. Blessings to you my brother.

  3. Thank you Bob. This reflection was a good reminder for me that God’s ways are not our ways. He just asks us to pray for our enemies: for their welfare, for their good, that they may return to God… we don’t have to have warm fuzzy feelings about them. This has helped me tremendously in certain situations with certain people. God be with you.

  4. This was eye opening for me. Jesus might not like me sometimes? But of course! How often do I not like a friend or my husband when they do something, yet I pray and forgive. I have read that I can love a person but do not have to like them. I’m starting to understand Christianity a little bit more. Thank you Bob

  5. Thank you Bob! Absolutely lovely reflection about putting our faith into action. May perpetual light shine upon Rey’s soul.

  6. Wonderful reflection and a good reminder that we don’t always like the people we love; however it is not our place to judge. Will put Rey on my prayer list! I noticed your prayer list is getting longer and with our new election coming up here in the USA I think we should also add a prayer for our voters who will determine the future of our democracy! God bless America! 🇺🇸

  7. Thank you Bob. Excellent reflection. May Rey rest in peace and may the perpetual light shine upon him.

  8. Thanks Bob for a very thought provoking reflection on the prayers of the faithful for others and not liking but still loving others. May I do a better job in both areas!
