Friday February 9th in Ordinary Time

Were they talking about social media today?

Social media is not all bad. It follows closely to the axiom of garbage in leads to garbage out. Good in leads to good out. Like anything of human origin, it has good and bad attached to it. My best man at my wedding was an older gentleman, Ron, who had a speech impediment and Cerebral Palsy. He was a funny man who loved to tell his old jokes. It took him longer and it was not so much the speech impediment. He would laugh before he arrived at the punch line. He couldn’t contain his own laughter. We who were his friends all had to laugh because he had told the joke hundreds of times, and we all knew how it ended. Ron was extremely intelligent. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in the 1950’s as a citizen with disabilities. Way before the accommodations of today’s laws. Those disabilities never stopped him. He had one job in his life as the editor of a construction magazine. He retired and that is when I met him as a retiree.

Long before I met Ron, he had an experience with some well-intentioned Christians who prayed over him and laid hands on him and were expecting Ron to be healed and walk as they did and remove his impediment. They were not successful. They told Ron that the problem was his lack of Faith. In actuality they were the ones who were blind and didn’t know it.

Ron was already perfect as he was. If you were his friend, you would have known that. Ron was a deep man of faith which was why I chose him as my Best Man. He was not Catholic but a very good Christian. It is funny he also wrote a weekly column for his Church bulletin. Much like I write a column for A Catholic Moment. Ron would have been upset at some of my grammatical errors and would have corrected my sentence structure hundreds of times.

Jesus came to Earth to correct our disabilities associated with our sinful nature. He also came to make our life easier and happier because He gave us a model of how a human can live a sinless life and still be funny and happy and have joy in their life. Jesus had to be happy and funny, or no one would have followed a sour puss.

None of us are perfect but we have a perfect model in our lives in the form of a happy, funny and Savior whom we love.

God Love You Always

  1. I kindly ask if another writer can be appointed to handle Thursdays writing. Dr. is obviously very busy with practice etc. which is totally understandable. There have unfortunately been several missed days and many very brief writings. Any thoughts on this…

  2. Thank you Bob! A new perspective on disability. Jesus is the Healer. And to recognize Him bringing us an inside healing is sometimes difficult when all people see is the outside. My husband was disabled the last several years of his life. I watched him grow Spiritually during this and one talent the Lord blessed him (us) with was his sense of humor.🤗🚀❤

Thanks be to God! Praying for all of us. Come Lord Jesus enter into our disabilities no matter how big or small! Amen🙏🙌

  3. Bob, very grateful for your Friday reflections…and for the reminder that whenever we have doubts about what to do or how to act, we can look to the perfect role model…Jesus.

  4. Thank you Bob. I never considered Jesus to be funny. Watching some of “The Chosen” I do remember him laughing and enjoying lighter moments with children and adults. This gives me such a warm feeling knowing this God and man was just like us…just like Ron. Amazing stuff Bob. Peace with you my brother.

  5. Brad, let our good doctor be who she is and accept it.
Do you have your name on a short list to take Wednesday’s spot?

  6. You obviously held your friend in very high esteem Bob and your anecdote on his joke telling made me smile.☺️
Like others,I have never ever thought of Jesus as having a humorous side, but who knows?I would like to think that he had an opportunity to smile and laugh when he wasn’t teaching or healing.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  7. I do agree with Brad Artigues. Dr. Analise is doing her very best, that’s obvious. But she does seem to be swamped with work, which is a stupendous task.

Rather than missing days, writing about her hectic work schedule and spiritual limitations, it would ease her burden if another writer is appointed.
