Amazing reflection, Steven. Many of the things you wrote about I try explaining to my 15 year old granddaughter. She doesn’t want to hear it. I pray that if I keep repeating it, as she matures it will sink in and take hold.

Hey Steven,

I understand your viewpoint. But....

But it raises the question of why did James and John want to be seated next to Jesus in Heaven? If there aren’t any preferred or special places in Heaven, why did Jesus reply, “...but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those whom it has been prepared.” (Mk 10:40)

Reading the footnote of Mk 10:38-40 states “...the authority of assigning places of honor in the kingdom is reserved to God.”

From this, couldn’t one deduce that there are tiers?

Steve, excellent well written reflection which caused me to really discern envy in the context of those who don’t know our Lord. Thanks for taking time out of your day to share your thoughts!

To A, I never forget the car sticker I once saw which said: "Those who wait to pray at the 11th hour die at 10:30".
Steve, thanks for your reflection. God bless everyone!

Totally agree. But I couldn't help wondering what the deal with St. Augustine is. One of his famous quotations goes something along the lines of "Grant me chastity, but not yet." Seems like he knew that his life of sin was not good, but he wasn't ready to give it up when he realized that it wasn't good. And then he becomes a saint, a famous one at that!

So, Steven, what do you make of St. Augustine? He wanted to explore a life of debauchery. Yes, he fits the bill of "it's never too late," but what about his reticence to renounce sin? He's an example of the attitude "I've got plenty of time to turn my life around."
