Bob, I certainly didn't view your comment as argumentative, and I humbly apologize if my reply seemed that way to you. (Tone is so hard to gauge over the Internet...) Thanks again for your comments, and have a wonderful Christmas!

Thanks Steven.
My intent wasn't to be argumentative, I was as I said confused. Your explanation is quite satisfactory. In facct it hit home because my mom was a Marsh.

Hi, Bob! I'm not Msgr. Pope, nor is his argument mine... you might want to ask him directly. (I'm also not an expert Biblical scholar -- I'm strictly a hobbyist -- so take any of my musings with a grain of salt.) :-)

Anyway, I suspect the challenge is that John specifically denies being Elijah, rather vehemently. (See John 1:21-27). However, Jesus seems to say that he is (see Matthew 11:14)... but even then Jesus appears to be less vehement ("if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come" is an odd way to say unequivocally that John is Elijah).

The way I understand Msgr. Pope's argument, I'll offer an example from my own life. My wife's name is Nikki Vrtis (she kept her maiden name after we got married). So, she's often asked, "Are you Mrs. Marsh?" There are two answers to that question. No, she's definitely not Mrs. Marsh; if you look at her identification, that name isn't close to what's on there, and neither is that name on any of her legal paperwork.

However, if the questioner is asking, "Are you Mrs. Marsh?" -- meaning, "Are you married to Mr. Marsh?" -- then the answer is yes. That is, she's fulfilling the role of my wife, the mother of my child, etc. She is Mrs. Marsh in all but name.

So, both Bible passages can be correct if John the Baptist is answering the question one way (about his personage), while Jesus is answering the question another way (about his role in God's divine plan).

There are other ways to interpret the whole situation -- as there are many Biblical questions -- but any answer that seeks to address if John the Baptist is actually Elijah needs to take into account John's own assertion that he isn't.

I'm confused. If John the Baptist wasn't Elijah returned, was he just plain old John the Baptist, prophet in his own right?
If Jesus was Elijah returned why hasn't that been widely accepted before now? Is he then both Elijah and messiah? Every homily, reading and discussion I've ever heard before always interpreted JB to be Elijah returned, and I've heard many.
Could you please help clarify Msgr. Pope's assertion?

Very penetrating. This something I seemed to ignore. I hope I really contribute to a larger whole some day if I haven't done it yet.
Thanks for this reflection.

Beautiful personal story. We always are in a mission field no matter if we are in Africa or Kansas. Some of us sow and others harvest.
My wife is into Ancestry.com and has done work on my family tree. She discovered interesting things about my family and the generations that are somehow connected, biologically and spiritually. Nice thoughts and perspective for Christmas.
