I have always wondered why we call our priests father when it says call no one father.

Anonymous, Priests are called Father I believe because of their role as intermediary between God and His people. I don’t think that Jesus was being literal here when He said to call no man Father. The term Father is used all over the Bible, including the Ten Commandments. Jesus is not telling us to not call your Mother’s husband, Father.

Jesus also says to call no one teacher but this term is used widely in the Bible and in our society. In Judaism the term Rabbi is still used.

I think Jesus is warning us against being prideful and acting in a way to call attention to our religious practices in an attempt to raise our status in the eyes of others. He tells His disciples not to use their position to lord over others. He stresses humility.
