SES, are you thinking of the cure of the man born blind, as described in Chapter 9 of John’s Gospel? Jesus’ disciples ask if the man’s blindness was a result of his or his parents’ sins. Jesus answers that it was instead “so that the works of God might be revealed in him” – and it was. Long term consequences of our actions, good or bad, should of course be considered, but let’s leave off judging other people. We must do the absolute best we can with the light (and life) God gives us but leave judgement up to the only one completely qualified to do it – God.

Thank you for your reflection. I am confused by it because it was my understanding that God’s punishment to descendants of the sinner occurred in the Old Testament, and does not apply to the New Testament — I read that somewhere. Could you please clarify?
