Of all the miracles Jesus could have performed, he performed one of a basic ‘want’ rather than a ‘need’ – Was it really necessary to have more wine? The head steward pointed out that cheap wine is served after guests have become drunk. That tells me, the guests must have been intoxicated. Why give them more wine? Scholars tell us this story really is about what Mary said “do what he tells you”. This won’t be the first time Jesus performs a basic ‘need’, as in the multiply of bread and fish. The apostles must have remembered what Mary said – even though they objected that a few fish and bread would not feed thousands of people, they did what He told them to do. Throughout Jesus’ ministry, we see this happening many times. So the question scholars have posed to us – are we doing what Jesus asks us to do.

January 18-25 is Week of Christian Unity. The theme is Justice. What is Jesus asking the whole Christian community to do.
