Fire21, perhaps not a change in conviction but opening the eyes of his followers to see what he already knew, that Jesus is the One Who Is To Come. The question makes sense if what John wanted was for them to move on and follow Jesus.

John testified that Jesus is the Son of God. But later, when in prison, John sends followers to ask, “Are You the One Who is to come, or should we look for another?” When and why the change of conviction?
