Thank you for an insightful reflection, Joe! I’m learning forgiveness so I can break the cycle. I don’t want my kids to get caught in the devil’s trap of blaming and shaming. As I learned during mass today, forgiveness is not an automatic event. Three conditions need to be met: 1) We need to recognize our need for forgiveness (have you ever tried to forgive someone who doesn’t want to be forgiven?), 2) We must be willing to accept forgiveness (Forgiveness restores our relationship with the offended person) and 3) We must share forgiveness (An unforgiving person cannot be forgiven him/herself).
