Sunday, 1-25-26, Word of God Sunday

1-25-26, by: Mark Gates

“Word of God” really hits home for me. I really enjoy proclaiming God’s Word as a lector, and of course “Word of God” as the obvious title for Jesus Himself. Both of these personal appreciations have made leaps and bounds worth of improvements in my life & Not always willingly on my part.

My legal disclaimer today is: Please read this reflection in its entirety once, before you choose to dislike me or write me off.

Today we hear from Isaiah 8:23 – 9:3, Paul to the Corinthians 1Cor 1:10-13 and Jesus, just after John the Baptist is arrested, Matt 4: 12-23. It is Isaiah and the Gospel that go hand in hand. Isaiah’s prophesy speaks directly about Jesus being in the land of Zebulun & Nephtali, and that Jesus IS the Light of the World… these two regions “Have seen a great light!” The background is that these two regions (named after sons of Jacob), while being part of the Promised Land originally, have fallen prey to the dreaded gentiles and the Assyrians. The Israelites have cohabitated and co-mingled with these ‘outsiders’.

The Israelites here have sinned against their faith and presumably against their God. If you fast-forward to Jesus’ time, we see this same attitude held against the Samaritans (Woman at the well) and all gentiles in general. Even though, the primary non-negotiable of desert life is ‘Hospitality’, we still find horrible examples of mistreatment of migrants, foreigners, and those not like us.

***My Confession: When I was 20 years old, my wife pregnant with my first born and I bought a house in the suburbs of Chicago. I was a ‘union’ meatcutter. My uncles hated me, because as an eighteen-year-old punk kid, who was ‘still wet behind the ears’, I was hired into a ‘Golden Job’ that would last the rest of my life. Little did any of us know that the 2 major grocery store chains in Chicago at the time (1976-1980) were already colluding together with the grocery union, to “break” the meatcutters union. It Worked!! Due to illegal immigration, use and abuse, in the cattle producing western states, Chicago was ripe and ready to break the meat unions and allow in “Boxed-Beef.” That’s why you can’t find a decent, ‘knowledgeable’ meatcutter anywhere near the Mississippi river, or east of it. Who knows what criminal, underhanded deals were agreed to, and made, in order to ruin our lives, homes and thriving communities.

**Going forward, my ‘golden life’ (secular that is) was ruined. The economy was in the toilet. So, with a resume that looked more like a criminal’s rap-sheet, myself and all blue-collar folks were suffering. **And Now, in 2025-26, we’re seeing it all over again! I had developed a deep, deep dislike for illegal immigrants, bordering on hatred.

**These feelings lasted for 50 years until I retired… I finally reasoned that they couldn’t hurt me anymore! Reconciliation, growth and redemption: “All things in God’s time.”

**In the absence of complete hospitality, I still considered myself a good and decent person. God was taking care of me and my family, and my harder attitudes towards other’s sin & sinners were softening. Remember: “Hate the sin, not the sinner”.

**After 5 millennia, as all God’s children, we still struggle with the same old prophecy from Isaiah… When will we see a great light. I wasted an entire lifetime only allowing myself a glimmer at a time! Time wasted is time lost. May the blessed Trinity have mercy on me and continue to light my path. Dear God, please forgive me!! Let us choose hospitality… Mark “G”

But I have always felt that the scriptures can speak for themselves. My job is just to shine a little light on them for people who maybe don't have the time to look into the readings deeply. I hope you enjoy and find value in my writings. I continue to be grateful for this opportunity.

  1. I echo Pam. Same sentiment. I appreciate your honest reflection and the challenge it provides. This may not be the arena, but why not? I speak for myself. As an RN , I don’t struggle with immigration issues. I struggle with illegal immigration. People accuse me of hatred and not true. I have volunteered my time in migrant health clinics offering healthcare in church settings to migrants regardless of legal status and offering of English tutoring but not many takers as there is no incentive to learn or just go to the ER for government to pay…which is taxpayers.
I, like all Christians challenge myself daily to love all people. Previous administrations deported more than current.
I try to offer a solution to root cause in my own way, but no takers. If this was the turn of the century 1900s to mid 1900’s when my family arrived (legally), I’ll bet I’d have had more takers. Some may ” hate” me too Mark! I understand the frustration and such wonderful Childhood memories I had going to the local butcher to get our fresh meats. They were well respected and treasured. I always remember getting a fresh slice of bologna offered to me as a treat. Butchering is a lost art. Another thing vanished from American landscape.

  2. Being human is part of knowing we are prone to error. But what is important is that when we come to full knowledge of such error to correct it. And I guess, you are doing so already and that is all that matters.
We thank God for his word “Our Saviour Jesus Christ” and the light he has brought our way. As we celebrate ths light today, let it continue to illumine every dark patch of hatred, pride, indifference, envy, covetousness and replace them with love, humility, care, respect and charity.
    Happy Sunday!

  3. Thank you Mark. Good backrooms information on today’s reading. I hope to see all my sins so I can confess them also. Thank you Lord for loving us for who we are and giving us the option to change.

  4. from MARK “G”,
Thank You all so very much for your love and support. I appreciate your honesty and openness. I try to earn it every Sun. ** A confessor once told me, “We will never be perfect until we are perfect in Heaven with God”. I’ve said it before, our pathway is paved with our “trying”, never give up on ourselves. GOD Won’t.!! 🙂

  5. I understand your thoughts. In England we face the same difficulties. In the early 1970s I saw at first hand the abuses of Trade Unions. Today the balance is strongly anti worker and I am a proud member of a TU. The late 19thC social justice teachings of the Church are just as valid today.

We too have substantial illegal immigration (open doors), while many educated professionals are emigrating. But: there are many refugees from persecution. I have known Iranians in London who left torture and more, and who contribute much to us. We need the Lord’s discernment to care for those in need, while treating illegals with justice. If not us, then who?

  6. Amen Pip.
There’s a saying about glass houses. And another about a plank in an eye. I, too, have my prejudices. I know, too, that I am far from perfect.

    Peace

  7. Thank you for sharing your honest and personal reflection. I really appreciate how you connect Scripture with your life experiences and personal growth. Your reminder to choose hospitality and let God’s light soften our hearts means a lot.
