I agree with your response to anonymous. Both the Pharisees and the Sadducees held positions of power in the society based on their knowledge of the law and in their power to control who is in and who is out as far as temple worship is concerned. I believe they saw Jesus’ message, and their belief that he was claiming to be the Son of God and an earthly king, as a direct threat to their positions as leaders of the Jewish people. The Pharisees had their power and prestige to lose.
The Pharisees (and even the disciples) believed the promised Messiah – Jesus, would crush all enemies and God’s new kingdom would be established here on earth.
That’s my take on it anyway FWIW.
