My husband grew up near journal square later moved to Kearny and then became Bayonne Police Officer. His cousins were near Marian Section. A good friend of mine who grew up in the Heights section father was JC firefighter and bought house in Seaside for the family to spend the summers. Your story reminded me of her family. We all now live in Rutherford.

I have to apologize for implying that my brother still lives in the same house that my Father built. When my Mom died in 2015 the house was given to my brother and his wife. My Dad died in 1986 and during the intervening years the house fell into disrepair in terms of electrical, plumbing, structure, etc. It would have taken a lot to restore it and my brother elected to rebuild on the same property. His talents as a builder mirror my Dad’s and he built a beautiful home and it is adorned with picture and memories of our past in the original home.

Thanks John for a beautiful reflection. What a beautiful tribute also to your father…glad that you preserved that house (home) that he built with his own hands. I do feel sad when I enter beautiful cathedrals and churches, only to find tourists with their cameras and wonder if any even make a small prayer. But, we know these are just buildings/structures. The most important is that God resides in our hearts, in our souls. So, at this Lenten season, let us clean house and dust off the blemishes in our lives, so we have a place worthy for our King Saviour to stay. Peace and blessings to all.

I love church! I look at it as God’s home where He invites His guests to come together and enjoy the comfort of knowing this is temporary place for us to live. Thank you for this reflection and the reminder that what we build here on earth is our ticket to eternal happiness! ❣️

Dr John. That was wonderful. I really pondered “The memories of our faith are made from Jesus occupying our souls. Taking our bodies, which are the house, and turning them into the home with God residing there.”
