You’re correct in your observations on The Chosen. There is storytelling license in most historical tales (George Washington and the cherry tree…? Umm, I don’t think so)
As for me, I like to see Jesus smiling and just living. There isn’t much of that reflected in scripture. So, yeah, not strictly biblical.
Also, I really identified with your memory “God was merely one of many aspects that competed for my attention”. So true for me as well. Guess we both had people in our lives praying for us! God Bless!

Thanks John for a beautiful reflection. I, too, love The Chosen and I promote it whenever I can. They did a good job with depicting Jesus’ human and divine nature. There are indeed many experiences or circumstances in our life which either make or break us. We pray for strength, peace and the grace of the Holy Spirit to stir our hearts into doing the right thing and to shape our lives into what God intends for us. Amen.

John,
I for one am a big fan of The Chosen. The director also tells us this series is not to replace the Bible but have heard it has many to start or start back reading the Bible.
It is not Hollywood either but crowd funded – the largest ever BTW.
For me, this series brings to life the stories in the Bible. I can also decipher what is fact and what is creative writing.
The fact that this series has brought so many people to God (or back to God) is not a bad thing.

Hi Dr. John. Excellent reflection. The milestone you had mentioned “Marriage to Elise, a Reform Jew, caused me to look critically at Christianity and begin to have to defend Catholicism. And become stronger in the process.”
I was married to a man who defined himself as an evangelical Christian. I was constantly attacked on my faith. It caused me to have to dive deeper into the scriptures and read Scott Hahn books and other apologetics. Wow did I learn and it drew me closer to Jesus.
My evangelical spouse left me (poof- gone no warning) and Jesus and The Blessed Mother saw me through and I was able to obtain an annulment.
I remarried a wonderful man in the church who has an amazing faith.
A milestone in my life for sure.
