Hi John and welcome to acatholic.org. I read commentaries daily and the writers give me insight into Scripture and God's relationship with us. Thank you for today's message. We all need to hear it from time to time. Our pastor once said this about the Adam & Eve story: God punished all 3 of them -- Adam, Eve and the serpent. why? Because you can't blame others. We're all to blame, God holds us all accountable. You cannot shift responsibility for your own actions to somebody else. So bravo Peter!

Passing the buck, justifying ones actions, blaming others, sweeping stuff under the carpet, to name a few behaviours has become part of the nature of flawed and dysfunctional human beings. Sadly, many people get away with these behaviours, especially those in high places, business, politics, and worse in religious organizations. What's the antidote to such behaviour? At the level of ordinary human beings, we can begin to recognize our faults, confess them, apologize, begin sincere reconciliation. I am quite sure this is happening among many people. But what about those in high office? Those who write laws, who pronounce judgement, etc. Below is a link to a document signed by Pope Francis and the UAE Imam. It's a bit long, but well worth the read. It covers every aspect of preserving human dignity. The document concludes with this statement:
"To this end, by mutual cooperation, the Catholic Church and Al-Azhar announce and pledge to convey this Document to authorities, influential leaders, persons of religion all over the world, appropriate regional and international organizations, organizations within civil society, religious institutions and leading thinkers. They further pledge to make known the principles contained in this Declaration at all regional and international levels, while requesting that these principles be translated into policies, decisions, legislative texts, courses of study and materials to be circulated."

The tough part will be for those in power to implement it.

On a serious note, what is the big deal with nakedness? Why would Adam and Eve have felt shame at discovering they were naked? God created them naked, just like the animals, and He continues creating us like that every day. Why shame? Gid created them, so they and their naked bodies were good. If there was ever an argument for revisionism going on in the Bible, this is a strong contender.

Being a Yankees (or Red Sox) fan is right up there with greed, lust, envy, etc. Good thing you repented of your inherited sin from your grandfather and saw the (lack of) light from Wrigley Field.

Go Blue Jays!

Well as for the part about Adam was a little off, because it was Eve who ate from the tree of knowledge first and convinced Adam to eat the fruit also, maybe cause she didn’t want to be the only one to have the knowledge of good and evil just like the players who indulged in enhancing their performance, but he should have fessed up to doing it also instead of blaming Eve for his participation.
