Thank you for your great explanation of the first reading John and it’s relevance in today’s world as well.
When I was younger,I never paid much attention to the first readings and just glossed over them before arriving at the Gospel of the day.All those long names and talk of fatted calves seemed fanciful and unnecessary to me.
Of course,I realise now, how important the books are in foretelling the coming of Christ and the birth of Christianity.Enjoy the Super Bowl!

“Panem et circenses.” Fans are described in the media as rooting for their “beloved” teams. I don’t follow sports and in particular won’t be watching the game tomorrow which has actually become a spectacle more than a sporting event. John, thank you for better explaining today’s Kings1 readings. I was a bit confused but you helped to answer a lot of my questions. Enjoy the Superbowl and let us all keep our hearts with God. I always wondered, if Jesus had first come now, would He watch the Superbowl or closely follow a sports team??? I go back and forth on the scenarios in my head.

Thanks Mr C. Right on Q as usual. Golden calves are anywhere and everywhere. They create distraction and diversion of our priorities. God knows where our hearts are…and so do we if we are honest. Lets enjoy the big game and get back to business. The glory of Easter is on the horizon. And yes the good deacon from Hartford gives us something to think about… “Lord what are we going to do today”.
