Yes, that is how I understand the aspect of the value of suffering illustrated in today’s story. There are other aspects, but this is an intriguing one that helps me be more willing to embrace suffering. Blessings…and blessings to all.

Thank you Mary, for bringing this reflection to us. It made me re-analyze my own thoughts on suffering when I was diagnosed with cancer. Just asking for help from friends and family was difficult. But somewhere down the road I began to believe that just asking for help was the opportunity for someone else to gain grace as the “helper”. Helping gave them a chance to turn their hearts and minds toward God. I could accept suffering so they could gain grace. Perhaps Jesus’ suffering coupled with my offering of suffering can therefore be a gift to others??? And God provides that opportunity, through my suffering, if I choose to share it.

I love the story you gave as example. The topic on suffering is usually a difficult one because the world doesn’t understand how a God who loves us will allow us to suffer. May God grant us the courgae to bear through whatever affliction He permits to be sent our way, Amen.
