On this Monday of the Fourth Week of Advent, the Church places before us two remarkable women of faith and gratitude: Hannah and Mary.
Hannah, long burdened by barrenness, poured out her heart before the Lord with tears and trust. God heard her cry, and in deep gratitude she offered back to Him the child Samuel—her long-awaited joy. Her prayer is not merely thanksgiving, but a profound act of surrender: “My heart exults in the Lord.” Hannah teaches us that authentic gratitude always leads us to give ourselves more fully to God.
Mary, too, stands before us as the perfect model of gratitude. At the Annunciation she received the greatest news ever given: she would be the Mother of Jesus, the Son of God. Her response, the Magnificat, echoes Hannah’s hymn. Mary’s gratitude is humble, joyful, and filled with faith: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord… He has looked upon His lowly servant.”
Both women remind us that gratitude is born from recognizing God’s mercy at work in our lives. It is not simply a polite “thank you,” but a spiritual awakening—a realization that God sees us, hears us, remembers us, and lifts us.
As Advent draws to its end, these two women invite us to ask:
What blessings has God given me that I may have overlooked?
How can I respond with deeper gratitude?
How might my thanksgiving become a gift of myself back to God?
May Hannah and Mary help us prepare our hearts to welcome Jesus with joyful, grateful faith—ready to say, like them, “My heart exults in the Lord… My soul magnifies the Lord.”
Have a wonderful Week
