Yes, rice to an Asian like me is a spiritual, cultural, social, and a political part of our lives. We thank God, gather around, affirm our identity, and desires for equity of resources in life with the blessing of having rice. My mother also always instructed us not to leave off a single grain on our plate less we forget the tired muscles and sweat from the heat of the sun of our farmers who toil to harvest rice. There is a beautiful and expensive painting of our famous painter,Fernando Amorsolo, showing men and women farmers surrounded by the rice fields bowing their heads for the Angelus. Despite all the hardships from their labor, they stopped from their work and thank God for this grain of rice that will someday feed the hungry.

Beautiful reflection! This reflection was especially poignant to me as we look towards Thanksgiving in the US. Rather than get caught up in all of the fanfare and what we can’t do in the time of Covid-19, let’s focus on “rice” and go back to the basics. Be like the widow who has so little. She focused on what she had and shared it.
