Hi, Scott,
God has promised those things--or a general protection--so Jacob is not giving God an ultimatum. When bonds are forming, there needs to be proof--is the promise kept? Jacob is not as fully "all in" as Abraham. Though Abraham had some doubts God would give him children, he was totally committed to God. Isaac was perhaps less so. Jacob less yet. He will follow God IF...IF God keeps his promises. As I keep reflecting on this, I wonder if that is why God showed him the dream and the ladder: God sees him as at the beginning of relationship. Interesting questions and conjectures...

Mary, first I'll join you in prayer for Bill. Second, since you seem in tune with this reading please correct what I am maybe misinterpreting at the end of this reading. Jacob, in the morning, says "If God stays with me...gives me food, keeps me safe...sees me home again then He will be my God". Why does it sound like Jacob is testing God, or even giving him an ultimatum?

Thank you Mary. You bring us the depths of our faith in a way that stirs the conscience to a closer relationship with God. Climbing the ladder has a new meaning for me. Peace my sister.

I ask you in your deep faith to pray for me that I have a good outcome from a lung biopsy I will be having soon. I also ask all readers of you reflection to pray for me as well. Thanks to all.
