I’m confused, since I don’t know the history behind the reading from Jeremiah.

You say that they engaged in child sacrifice (you mentioned that last week, too), but also that they were concerned about their lack of fertility.

If you’re worried about your fertility (ability to have children), why are you sacrificing the children you already have? Why did they do that?

Also, maybe the reason that birth rates are decreasing is because people can’t afford to have kids anymore. Low-paying, temporary, part-time jobs without benefits are becoming the norm, and if you can’t support a family, how can you bring yourself to have one? BTW, the view above is not incompatible with a pro-life orientation. People are not getting married, and abstaining from sex, because they can’t support a family.

Shame that I know people with a PhD who fall into the category of low-paying, temporary, part-time jobs.
