In today’s first reading Zedekiah, the puppet king, was placed on the throne of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Judah and some of the surrounding nations thought it was a good time to rebel against Nebuchadnezzar who was weakened due to problems in his empire. Hananiah did not like Jeremiah’s gloomy message as well as seeing him wearing the yoke to show that they would remain under Nebuchadnezzar. He prophesied in the name of the Lord, contradicting the message of Jeremiah and promising hope that Nebuchadnezzar would be defeated, the vessels returned to the temple as well as the captives would return home within two years. Jeremiah told Hananiah that whatever his intentions, he was a false prophet and he harmed the people of Judah by leading them to trust in a lie – a lie that they wanted to believe, because it was a much more positive message than his. Their proposed rebellion against Nebuchadnezzar would fail and they would serve Nebuchadnezzar who would even rule over the beasts of the field.

In today’s gospel reading, Jesus needed some alone time – time to pray and connect with his father. While the disciples were being tossed about by the strong waves, their fear was compounded when they saw a “ghost” who was actually Jesus walking towards them during the fourth watch (between 3a.m to 6a.m). “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid” are one of the most repeated commands Jesus gives in the Bible. Jesus stretches out his hand and bids Peter to come walking on the water to Him. Peter almost did, but when he shifted his gaze from Jesus to the sound of the strong wind, faith gave way to fear and he began to sink.

So many times I have this sinking feeling Lord. I know you are in my boat, but I can only see the darkness of the night and the sound of the waves and fear takes over my thoughts. Lord, I believe, but please help my unbelief.
