Too many people wouldn't take the time to think "Get it wrong and he might never have faith. He might never have hope. He might never be able to handle another death in his life.
Get it right and you may set him on a path where he is open to exploring the depths of God’s love and His eternal promise." They say the first thing that comes to their minds not realizing that what they say can have a lifelong effect on a young child experiencing death for the first time. I was 14 when my older brother drowned. It was my older cousin and his wife, people of strong faith, that shared the promise and hope of everlasting life with me. I witnessed their faith when several years later their teenage son died suddenly from an aneurysm in his heart. They had a much easier time accepting the loss of their son than my father, an agnostic, had with the loss of my brother. Not to say they grieved any less, just that they knew their son still lives.
Thank you for a great reflection. God bless.

One approach might be to ask the 7 year old what his mother might have said to him and then what she might of wanted for him to do for her. You said several reasons for death possible, and that it doesn't matter, yet it might matter. Much depends on the child and much depends on the circumstances. Not enough information. I'm a parent and I'm not sure what age we should begin to do it but I think every child needs to be aware that death is a part of life. One of the reasons that God the Father had the resurrection for the third day is because He wanted for Jesus to experience the separation of the soul from the body. I know that doesn't help a 7 year old but perhaps it may help a consoling adult and for him to know his mother is in good company. Certainly a delicate matter as you said. God bless.
