I was the only person, apparently, to complain about the comparison to Karl Marx and Norman Lear. I understand how a teacher can compel students to develop critical thinking, but your intro using these two examples was frightening without proper contextual framework. I am sure you are well aware of how the Catholic Church was condemned during WWII for not taking a stronger stance against Nazism, Italy’s Fascism, and Soviet Union’s Totalitarianism (communism). Karl Marx was an atheist and wrote the “Communist Manifesto”, as I am sure you are aware. Today’s young society seems to follow a socialist point of view as many universities “teach” against capitalism and promote “free” stuff paid by our government (which is really hardworking taxpayers dime). Even Lenin stated that socialisms’ goal is communism. I have to admit that I have seen all of Norman Lear’s sitcoms, but again in today’s society his socialist views have undermined what the democracy of the United States republic represents. Mr. Garvey, I am saddened that this article uses such examples as these for teachers in the same ink as comparison to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. However, it surely was an eye opener which prompted me to call our parish office, so hopefully others will respond accordingly.
