In our age, a person would use it to demean another. In the OT and NT, if we read it in context, the Pharisees would have understood that Jesus was drawing their attention to something deeper. They may not have liked it, but they understood it was a part of Jesus’ teaching. In a sense he’s once again calling the Pharisees hypocrites!

Lord Jesus, deliver me from foolish behaviour. Amen. ? ?
