I did laugh at the counting comment and did not find the analogy as cutesy. However, with the limits of space and providing reflections for people of so many variables: education, experience, age… and levels of hurt. It is impossible to write to all of your audiences. I am recovering from a horrible relationship. Forgive my aggressor? By the grace of God and a good therapist…maybe. Even so, your reflection is so helpful. Thank you!

Dear Jack Findlay… Please read “The Book of Forgiving…” by Desmond Tutu and his Daughter Mpho Tutu… and you’ll find that even in tragedy some humans rise to the “impossible” level of total forgiveness. Not “cutesy”… but very difficult. Argue for your limitations and they are yours. JLS.

If,by a miracle of grace,you are able to turn to the person,and with a loving look in your eyes,say,”I forgive you,” then you have achieved the greatest of all human accomplishments.God,grant me the divine grace to strive to accomplish this nearly impossible feat along my journey of faith.Thanks Bob for this wonderful reflection/reminder.

Thank you, Bob, for pointing out what I had never realised before: that forgiving for something deliberately done against you is absolutely the “greatest human accomplishment”. As you imply, it is superhuman, and that is the point: our aim in life is to be more God-like: “Be thou perfect”. No wonder it can take a lifetime of trying.

Thank you for the reflection. It is almost impossible for me to look at one in the eye and forgive the one who has deliberately sputtered Ketchup on me! That’s what God is calling us to do. That is what Jesus did on the cross. To forgive unconditionally. I pray for God’s grace because it is not humanly possible.
