Thanks to all who commented on this reflection. It means a lot when I can see people are thinking about the Scripture and its application. When you think about what the Scripture is saying and notice what goes on in your heart, you are having a dialogue with God about that Scripture. You are giving God a chance to talk to you. To stimulate you to have that dialogue is what all of us who write for A Catholic Moment are trying to do.
A couple of answers to comments: I agree with Don that there is an important connection between this topic and the meaning of pain and suffering. Understanding all of these matters helps me make sense of some of the frightening events going on in the world right now. I am not familiar with Fr. Scanlon’s book, but it sounds interesting. I have always loved Saint Pope John Paul’s work on suffering. Peter, my theology degree came from St. Meinrad, http://www.saintmeinrad.edu. The reference to “her” in the prayer referred to the trouble I’d had the day before being obedient. I changed the phrasing to better fit for other people. Blessings, Mary Ortwein

Mary, you have been very insightful on the topic of evil existing in the world and why God allows it.. or rather uses it for our good. Last week, a similar piece by you helped us think a lot over it. God bless you for your words of wisdom. It helps a great deal.

Question the Evil in the world and why it is allowed if GOD is good. Your reflection has wrapped itself around me and for once opened my eyes that I might see. How comforting to know
That GOD allows bad things to happen as a vehicle to bring us closer to him..
