Confession does get us closer to God... In my state the lines grow longer in lent especially before good friday and before christmas for the bi annual reconciliation! It helps us feel better however maybe we do it more outa a habit than an act of contrition of our sins!?

I agree with much hope. After rereading my statement I see the negativity that it projected. That was not my intention. It was the sadness more so with the church, I feel and witness , and how it falls short of connecting us to Gods grace. My heart is frustrated with our local politically verbal priests. The step to make reconciliation to a priest instead of directly to God is my hope to understand again. To be more like Oklahomans was not meant as a cut but more a true desire to feel that grace connection . The beauty of my childhood weekly confession, walking home with an extra skip in my step and a joy in my soul is buried in frustration. Thank you for your response

The sacraments make us holier and not a condemnation to sinners. We are all sinners. The sacraments make us better Christians and therefore more open to the movement of the Spirit of God in us. It is not Florida verses Oklahoma. It is the state of grace and our connection to God. Reconciliation brings us to that state of grace. No part of the country has sinned greater or less than any other. We are all sinners but the point of Haggai is what do we do about it. We fall. We get up. Repent ! We move to the goal. The people of Haggai's generation listened and so should our generation.

Oklahoma vs. Florida! These are troubling times in our Catholic Church. We are lost and confused. Our church is on murky water. Gods Commandments have mean swallowed by Catholic Church rules. As St. Vincent DePaul reflected; humility and charity trump rules. Reconciliation is confusing when people are living the difficulties of hatefulness , political beliefs being more important than love they neighbor ... etc...and thus confusion with our church . Our church’s focus has been on personnel reconciliation but as yet the church has not give itself up to complete reconciliation with God our Father and his commandments. Feeling personnel, individual reconciliation with God is such a blessing. I hope we become more in tune with Oklahomans.

Hey Bob,

Why are the parishioners in line going to confession?

Easy answer, because of sin. A little bit deeper of an answer, because they believe in the sacrament of reconciliation.

And to believe in the sacraments must mean they believe in a higher power, namely God.

And if they believe in God and the sacraments, they must be Christians, specifically Catholic.

Today’s Gospel asks, in my opinion, one of the most important questions of our faith. Jesus subtlety asks the Apostles what the general public thinks about Him. It a fair question, considering all that has happened. And the answers that are given are reasonable. Then Jesus ask them specifically, ”But who do you say that I am?”

Substitute the people in line for the Apostles, specifically Peter.

Now you know why the are really in line.
