Hey Bob,

Teaching of the 10 commandments, that must have been interesting. As I’ve said before, it’s easier to teach “no” than “nice”.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but in your reply to Salva, don’t you mean Deuteronomy, specifically chapter 5, and not Ecclesiastes?

I have alwayd wondered why in the parable of the sower, the thorns are equated with both worldly anxiety and the lure of riches. A lot of anxiety in the world has nothing to do with the lure of riches. My anxieties have nothing to do with riches, but with health and safety.

The Ten Commandments continue to challenge and convict us, especially in a society that does not embrace them. They are the basic foundation that literally paves the way to our happiness and freedom. Jesus elevates them in the Beatitudes. If they are not central in my life, I can always tell something is out of order, and I am unhappy. Thank you, Bob, for the great reflection.

Ethics, morals and compassion. Not everyone has them. A challenging environment in a local (state sector) school where I am a Governor. At least 14 nationalities/languages and at least three religious groups plus some who have no religious affiliation. But with Anglo-Catholic morals and ethics at the heart of the school, the children are happy and healthy (mostly!) and tolerant of others.

Bob,
Thanks for your reflection but I think that I disagree on one point. I don’t think many young people in our country actually know the Ten Commandments given the legal restrictions to teaching the Truth in the US public school systems. I think this is one of the biggest reasons for the violence and hate in our society today. This is why we believers should take extra time with the young to try to teach right from wrong by tying their actions or inactions back to the Ten Commandments. If we could all just try to save one soul for eternity our earthly lives will have been worthwhile.

Difference in numbering of Ten Commandments between Protestant and Catholic is not only challenging within the church, but also outside. This recently faced us, when we sat on January[five months back] for South Sudan National Examination for Secondary School, during which we were instructed in the examination paper to write the Ten Commandments in their order. We[catholics] eventually realized afterward that the recognizable order to the examiners is Protestants’.
