Friday, January 30th in Ordinary Time

‘This is what the Kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know.

Monks of Weston Priory, Winters Coming Home Album is one of my favorite Albums. The sixth track, has a song with the following line:

” You are ever a part of our lives, all the good you do will live on in our lives”

Now I know that this is impossible, because speaking for myself, the good that happens to me is always forgotten the next day, or week, or year. Nonetheless, even though the good you do will be forgotten, the seed produced by that good will sprout and live forever in the Kingdom of God. God has a much longer memory than me.

Saint Mother Teresa in her “anyway prayer says,” The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow”. The good forgotten by humans but not by God.

Both of these statements can be true at the same time.

In the Kingdom of God others doing good have in the past planted seeds in us. Those seeds sprouted and grew in us. We in turn do good (plant seeds) in others and the cycle grows larger. We don’t know the result, but that is not what we are supposed to do with those seeds. Some seeds unfortunately will not sprout and fail. People will forget. The seed will grow in someone else.

Even the good seeds planted by David did not all sprout. David had to pay for the murder of Uriah the Hittite. We all plant the bad seeds of sin, but what is going to build the Kingdom of God but the good we do in our daily lives. How do we treat the minimum wage grocery clerk? It could be a good seed that sprouts or fall on a rock and die.

Do not fall into the trap that says whatever we do will not matter. It is a seed and it does matter, because we are building the Kingdom of God. We may not see the end of what we do, but it does matter.

Please pray for the people of Minnesota and the seeds they are planting!

God Love You Always
