Hello “A”. I may not be able to explain the succession of popes very well. Other, more educated Catholics could probably do a better job at it. From what I understand, the pope lays hands on priests when they become a bishop, then a new pope is elected from these bishops.

Laura what a beautiful and loving reflection. Your words have soften my heart, enhanced my my desire to be strong with my faith in Gods church and to remember to forgive trespasses as God will trespass me. May the devil be throwing a temper tantrum over your words.

So Saint Peter laid hands on his successor before he was crucified in Rome? Ok, that part may be believable, but how did other popes lay their hands on their successors? All popes until Benedict XVI died in office. So perhaps Benedict laid his hands on Francis, but if other popes lay their hands in their successors before they died, then why would the successor be chosen through voting by the cardinals? And with several votes, since it sometimes is black smoke that comes out of there. And the voting occurs only after the current pope has died (with the exception of Benedict), so there is no way that popes put their hands on their successors, because they have died.
