Friday, August 22nd, Mary, Our Lady, Mother and Queen

‘Wherever you go, I will go, wherever you live, I will live. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.’

I recently was speaking of my Mom to a receptionist at the Cancer Center. I loved my Mom and her name was also, Mary. When I left home for college, she taught me to do my laundry and iron my shirts. To this day when I iron a shirt or my wife, Anna’s blouse I will think of my mom. I do not separate whites and darks unless it is the first time I wash, a garment. Still, I follow most of her rules.

Not all of us had a perfect mom, but Jesus did. I love Mary’s instructions to the wine servers at Cana. Do whatever He tells you. The quote under the above picture is from a Gentile woman named, Ruth, who made this statement to her mother-in-law after both their husbands had died. Great faith describes Ruth and Mary.

Jesus today honors His mother as should we. Our mother’s carried us to birth, taught us to iron shirts, tried to teach morals. Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was sinless (Immaculate Conception) Jesus said, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.’ Mary and Jesus were already following these rules. She had a personal relationship with Our Savior.

As an unwed mother, Mary, risked her life to give birth to Jesus and for that Jesus honors her today. Joseph could have easily said no. If my mom asked me to do something I would do it. If the mother of Jesus asked Him to do something He would and does.

This is why the rosary is such an important prayer. The beads and what they are made of are immaterial to the prayers offered by user. When I was a runner in my younger days, I would say one or two mysteries of the rosary when I was training.

We as Catholics do not worship Mary and she is not the fourth person of the Blessed Trinity. Nonetheless, as Queen she has a royal presence with Jesus her son. At the Cross Jesus gave us His mother. Use her for the Glory of Jesus. Loving is what Mary does.

God Love You Always

  1. Thanks Mr Burford. Motherly love and teaching are the bedrock of family life. We must honor mothers and recognize that without them there is no chance at life. With them we have life in abundance. Peace and Happy Friday to Mary and all mothers out there…keep ironing Bob!

  2. thanks for a lovely reflection – we should also include in our prayers Sudan and Gaza and all other peoples who are living a terrible life because of greed and arrogance
    thanks once again
