It is my understanding that when the larger public gates were locked at night, people would have to “lower” themselves to enter the narrow and low gate while a camel would literally have to kneel and crawl through it — hence, Jesus’ reference to it being “easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God”.
