It is my understanding that when the larger public gates were locked at night, people would have to &quot;lower&quot; themselves to enter the narrow and low gate while a camel would literally have to kneel and crawl through it -- hence, Jesus&#039; reference to it being &quot;easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God&quot;.
