At first, it may seem strange to celebrate the cross. The cross was an instrument of suffering and death. Yet for us Christians, the cross has become the greatest sign of God’s love.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up.”
Jesus is speaking about the cross. He will be lifted up so that we may have life.
And then we hear those beautiful words: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.”
The cross tells us how much God loves us. God did not wait for us to become perfect before loving us. He loved us in our weakness, in our sinfulness, and in our brokenness. And He gave His Son for us.
Sometimes we ask ourselves, “Does God really love me?”
