When Jesus finished these words,
The crowds were astonished at his teaching.
For he taught them as one having authority.
and not as their scribes.

Authority is a hard word for me to deal with.

As an opinionated person and a woman in a country like India, having an opinion different from the authority’s, I have always been intrigued by it. As a surgeon, having a mentor is very important—unfortunately, in my 20 years, I never once had any figure of authority be that to me!

I do have some amazingly knowledgeable seniors who I look up to when I seek professional discussions and help, but it is not the same as having someone who mentors you through your career! In fact, I had the opposite: a lot of doctors who told me I’m not good enough! I am not smart enough and need more training—who rolled their eyes and sighed when I struggled with a step? Until one person, my current boss, speaks, a kind lady with a soft-spoken voice with hands of an angel—who can remove any cancer—speaks with knowledge of years with absolute conviction… everyone strains their ears but listens!

A person who speaks with authority may not always be in charge or right, or vice versa, but with Jesus, everyone listening knew He was the Lord! Every day as I pray and close my eyes and listen or try to listen to His voice, I realize my life is also under His authority! Yet I push Him away and feel like I’m struggling with it!

As a person who had issues with authority, especially at work , I am trying my best to surrender myself to God! Every day I listen and think I need to be a bit more christ like —

Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them
will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.

buidling my life on the rock – one stone at a time – one day at a time!!!

AMEN

  1. Having a serious problem with authority (and father issues) has made it difficult to truly live out my relationship with God. It must be one of those things that only Christ can accomplish. Precious Lord help us.
