If this enterprise, this movement of theirs, is of human origin it will break up of its own accord; but if it does in fact come from God you will not only be unable to destroy them, but you might find yourselves fighting against God.’
Last week was Prom Week for my wife, Anna and me. Not our Senior Prom but my granddaughters. We traveled over 440 miles to and from Miami, Ok to pick up my great grandson who was her escort to the prom. My great grandson stayed with us and it was a joy to have him stay with us and to see the dress of my granddaughter. The bottom line was that they had a good time and good memories of a magical time in their lives. Anna and I were a small part and a witness to the joy.
Miracles happen around Jesus. Miracle happen because of and with Jesus. Miracles happen when we do what we are supposed to do and follow His commands. Look at the Wedding at Cana. Mary told the servants to do whatever He asked them to do. In today’s miracle of the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus said, ‘Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing gets wasted.’ So they picked them up, and filled twelve hampers with scraps left over from the meal of five barley loaves. The thing that pops out to me is that the disciples did whatever Jesus told them to do.
One of the reasons that I respect priest, sisters and other clergy is that I respect them first and foremost as human beings. Then I respect them for Holy Orders or religious vows. They are not perfect and neither am I. One of my old Pastors had entrusted his finances to a company for his retirement. Well, the company was convicted of fraud. Because the pastor was an investor his own finances and the finances of our church were held in question. My pastor was exonerated but he lost his life savings and had to start over as he approached his retirement years.
So, when Jesus or my present parish priest tell me to obey the Commandments and love my neighbor then I have to listen. Not because I respect or love them less, but because they are leading us and trying to follow the Gospel and as Mother Mary put it. We are doing what He tells us to do. Miracles Happen. Miracles of life. We may not have to feed five thousand people, but we can be messengers of Jesus by doing what He tells us. We may not see every miracle, but they will happen.
