The readings for the Monday of the First Week of Lent remind us to be aware of our environment and attentive to those around us. True discipleship is about doing the work of God even when no one is watching. As Jesus tells us in Gospel of Matthew 25:35, “I was hungry and you gave me food.” Our love for Him is shown in how we care for others.
If we are true followers of Christ and live as we profess, the world will indeed be better because of our witness. Faith is not simply words, but action. It is seen in kindness, generosity, forgiveness, and compassion.
The commandments of the Lord are not a burden; rather, they set us free. They guide us toward the fullness of life that God desires for His sons and daughters. In following them, we discover that obedience to God leads to true freedom and peace.
And so we can confidently echo the words of the Psalmist in Psalm 19: “Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.”
May this Lenten season deepen our commitment to live what we believe, serving Christ in one another each day
