Saturday, 8/19/17 – As for me and my house

Our first reading today is from the last chapter of the book of Joshua. One of my favorite Bible quotes is from Joshua 24:15 “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord”. In the past I have received many  presents from friends or relatives with this quote.  I can not tell you the number of coffee mugs, bookmarks, letter openers and all sorts of things I received as a gift with that quote on it. [What do you get someone who has everything?] type of gift for under $ 4.

Our readings today are at the end of the Book of Joshua. He was the kind of guy the Lord would not have spit out of His mouth. He was a fierce warrior and servant of the Lord. He had one goal to serve only one God.

In Joshua 5:11-12 “On the day after the Passover they ate of the produce of the land in the form of unleavened cakes and parched grain. On that same day after they ate of the produce of the land, the manna ceased. No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.”

This was the start of the possession of the promised land of Canaan after crossing the Jordan from the readings on Thursday. It started at the Battle of Jericho and after the Israelite’s ate the produce of the land the manna stopped.

There was no turning back.

But it wasn’t all success. The next city to conquer was Ai and the Israelite army was defeated. They lost because they thought the city of Ai was a pushover. They only sent a portion of their army because they thought they could do it all themselves.

They left on important being behind, God.

Stop and think who these people were. The generation that crossed the Red Sea out of the Land of Egypt were all dead or too old to fight. This was a new generation born in the wilderness who had wandered for 40 years. They knew nothing other than manna. They had grumbled and complained. They were bitten by snakes and worshiped a golden calf, but the Lord was training them to depend on Him and Him alone and gave them simple rules that He expects us to follow, as well.

Last Sunday, I volunteered at our church  for a back to school pancake breakfast after the first two Masses. This is my way serving no matter how small.  As it turned out we had more men volunteers to show up to serve than there were positions to serve. If you volunteer a great deal this is always a nice position to be. The camaraderie and community spirit are great.  I think everyone enjoyed themselves and I always receive more than I could ever possibly give. It was a great day.

Saint Thomas Aquinas has a famous quote and goes something like this . Work as if everything depended on you and Pray as if everything depends on God.

Joshua’s main message was to serve only one God. We all  have sometimes worshiped other gods and failed  to follow His commandments.

Every generation has to learn this lesson. Joshua’s generation had to learn it.

My grandparents had to learn it.

My parents had to learn it.

I have to learn it and I am still learning.

My children have to learn it.

My grandchildren and great-grandchildren have to learn it.

The other god could be an internet picture, or an employer paying his employees less than a fair wage or an employee taking a pen or stapler home for personal use or taking an extended break or even doing shoddy work. The important thing is that we have to make that commitment to serve the one and only God or sadly some other god.

In the gospel reading for today Jesus said  “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”  A child has a simple dependency on a parent, this is the same simple dependency that God wants us to have on Him. They do not have the difficulty of following the commandments that adults do. When we as adults receive the Holy Eucharist as true manna from God in partaking in the Body and Blood of Christ we become those children again. Have you ever noticed that the more times during a week that you receive Holy Communion that the closer to Jesus you get?

There is no turning back.

At Shechem the Israelite’s made that commitment to follow the commandments of God and serve no other gods. When Joshua said As for me and my house we will serve the Lord. He was not speaking for himself but his entire family. Lead by example. Your deeds are powerful. They speak volumes.  You show more by what you do than say.

Refrain from the Song “Blest are They” by David Haas:

“Rejoice and be glad! Blessed are you; holy are you! Rejoice and be glad! Yours is the Kingdom of God!”

Prayer request: Please pray for peace for the world today and from terror on all sides.

God Bless

Bob Burford

  1. “They left on important being behind, God.”
    I love the phrase!
Wherever, whatever, whoever, whenever & however we are doing, we have to be with the same God as we worship and depend on! Not what the world is offering!

Thanks Bob. This is a great reflection for today. It do make sense!

I join you and to all readers in prayer for peace of the world. Let the God of peace rule the world today!

  2. Thank you for this insightful reflection, Bob. I appreciate your writings. As I get ready for work this morning, I’m reminded that I need to be a light to the world, especially to my patients at the hospital. I love the quote you provided from St. Thomas Aquinas, “Work as if everything depended on you and Pray as if everything depends on God.” This is a great reminder, especially in terms of being a light to my co-workers as well. I want to be someone they can count on to get the work done. Oftentimes, I come across a very involved Burn victim with multiple injuries usually from a car accident. It overwhelms me to think of how much pain (physical and emotional) that they’re going through.
Oftentimes they are in a coma and I pray over them as I treat their injuries. I also offer to pray with patient who are willing and able. Thank you for the reminder that God is always with me and will help me in whatever I need. I’ll use this as a reminder to my patients as they go through their time of suffering, to encourage them to work hard during therapy and to give them hope that God will heal them in due time.

  3. Great reflection today Bob. It reminds me that complete reliance on God is the way to the fruits of the Spirit.

Loved this reflection. Now more then ever we need to keep these goals in mind. God gives everyone the spirit of a child to love and be accepting. It is incumbent that all people resist the evil of encouraging hate, racism, and bigotry through words, actions or innuendo a process that begins at home. Praying for all those injured and the souls lost in recent violence here at home and abroad. God be with us all now and forever.
    Your loving wife, Anna

  6. Thank you , Bob, for an excellent reflection on Joshua’s determined heart to follow God as a household and serve Him only. And I echo the sentiments expressed by you and others concerning praying for peace. Certainly after recent wars and national and international violence and terrorism we all see the need for love to overcome hatred and violence. But, may I be so bold as to suggest that we must do more than pray, as powerful as it is. Do we not need to reexamine our complicity in spreading violence by following the world’s response to evil which is engaging in more violence through military dominance, killing evil doers but also innocent people caught up in the violence…necessary collateral of war. Jesus talked and walked a life of non-violence in the world admonishing his disciples to ” Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you. Don’t return evil for evil, but overcome evil with good” and many more admonitions. We, as Christians, need to pray that God will show us how our nationalistic teachings and fervor have clouded our first and foremost desires to serve God above all else, by loving our neighbors, whether they be good or bad, next door or over seas. My son, also named Joshua, spent years considering these questions. And a tour in Iraq crystallized for him the necessity to follow Christ and many a Saint and put down his weapon and take on the armor of love. His conscience demanded he become a Conscientious objector upon his return. After seven years of spreading the message of non-violence, justice, and love he died from cancer that resulted from burn pits that our own military used to get rid of waste. ( illegal in the US). Thousands of soldiers have died and are still suffering from the effects. Only one devastating effect of war. But Joshua died with a peaceful heart and legacy of love. And His household changed by his decision and his legacy lives on. We CAN change the world. The last sentence in an essay he wrote on the history of non-violence in the Church before he died says this. ” Simply put, if Christians wish to lesson the spread of evil throughout.the world they need only to refrain from doing it.”
“Fear not those who can kill the body but that which can destroy the soul”. Just Imagine our world if only Christians alone determined to put away violence and chose ‘ the way of love’ here and beyond our borders. Would we not begin to see the ushering in of the Kingdom of God?
“And let him turn away from evil and do good. Let him seek peace and pursue it” IPeter 3:11

Thank you Bob for this great reflection. I needed to hear it this morning. I love the verse “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord”. I have it in my foyer as I walk through my door. It is one of my favorite verse as many others. ” Work as if everything depended on you and Pray as if everything depends on God.” I loved this quote; as it reminded me that God is with us at all times and we are totally depended on HIM. I have been in health care for more than 15 years helping cancer patients and God has been the source of my strength. Unfortunately, this past Monday, the company I worked for has declared bankruptcy and many of us including myself have lost out job. Now more than ever I need God’s wisdom and help as I am searching for a new job. I pray He will open a new door where I can serve and glorify HIM. Psalm 150:6 “Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.”
