Jesus Reaches for Peter in the SeaThe Dore Bible Gallery

by Gustave Dore

The photo slides below are from the Holy Scriptures Old and New Testament Book Collection that was first published in 1885 in Stuttgart, Germany by Gustave Dore.  Gustave Dore was an artist who specialized in book illustrations but was most famous for the artwork he created for the Holy Bible. He was born in Strasbourg, France in 1832 and began his career as an artist in Paris, France when he was only 15 years old.

Gustave Dore’s biblical illustrations were first published in France in 1865 and then they were reprinted in the late 1860’s in the German and English versions of the bible. He created about 240 illustrations for the large volume bibles and then published a smaller version a few years later to make them more affordable, because the large volume bible was too expensive for the average person.  Gustave Dore’s illustrations were very popular in America and Europe through the early 1900’s. Over 1.5 million people visited his exhibit in the Chicago Art Institute in 1896.  His artistic depiction of the various scenes in the bible greatly influenced some of the early films that were produced on the bible, including the movie “The Ten Commandments” that was first released in 1923.

The photos in these slides are from a smaller collection of Mr. Dore’s work called the Dore Bible Gallery. A sample of his best illustrations are showcased in the slides below.  I hope you enjoy his unique illustrations of some of our most favorite stories in the bible!
