Laura-Kazlas-Welcome to A Catholic Moment!

My name is Laura Kazlas and I’m the creator and founder of A Catholic Moment. Catholics read a lot of different things on the internet these days, but this website is a place for Catholics to read, reflect, and discuss the daily readings for Mass. Our website is run entirely by a group of volunteer writers who have a genuine love for the scriptures that we have for Mass every day. I personally was raised as a non-believer, but came to believe in God when I was 12 years old and was baptized because of the words in sacred scripture. I later became a Catholic because of the Mass. The first time my husband took me to Mass, I thought it was the most holy, beautiful sense of worshiping God that I had ever experienced. I still do. My husband John and I have been married for 30 years. We have a son, a daughter, a granddaughter, and a cat. I currently serve as the program coordinator for Catholic ministry at a men’s prison in Salem, Oregon in the USA, and also at the Prison Ministry Office in the Archdiocese of Portland.

Dr. Carolyn 4Carolyn Berghuis, MS, ND, CTN

Hello! My name is Carolyn Berghuis. I am a board certified traditional naturopath, founder of Trinity Holistic Wellness and creator of The L.I.V.E. Method (Love is Victorious Everywhere) and modality that brings about resolution through forgiveness and acceptance. My husband, Scott, and I have been married over 25 years. We enjoy a rich and wonderful life together with three children and five grandchildren! Then there are our beloved family dogs who also bring much joy into our lives. We live in Carmel Indiana in the USA and are parishioners of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. I enjoy often participation in daily Mass and Eucharistic Adoration where Christ sweeps me away. I hold several degrees and am currently pursuing a Masters in Pastoral Theology at Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology. I believe forgiveness is the cornerstone to emotional healing and you will see this reflected often in my writing. In addition to my writing, my work as a Naturopath, the continued creation of The L.I.V.E. Method Transformational Retreats (TheLIVEMethod.com) and related materials, and my family life, I enjoy being an inspirational speaker, especially when speaking on the topic of faith and forgiveness.

Joe LacombeJoe LaCombe

My name is Joe LaCombe, and I am a writer in Indianapolis, Indiana in the USA. My amazing wife Kristy and I have been married for 15 years and we have an awesome little boy, Joseph, who is in 1st Grade! We are members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Carmel, Indiana where we volunteer with Adult Faith Formation, most recently with the marriage enrichment ministries. To see adults, and married couples embrace the sacraments, especially the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is a beautiful thing, and being able to tap into my experiences and bring the message of God to people through the written word is a passion of mine. I am an avid runner! I love to run and be out in the nature that God created, so you will find me running not only on sunny days, but rainy days, and even snow! I love to train for and compete in distance races, and find a deep spirituality in running, and I see distinct parallels between running and spirituality and life. I am excited and extremely blessed to be able to contribute to this website and look forward to sharing my thoughts and experiences!

John Ciribassi, DVM, Dipl. ACVB

Hello! My name is John Ciribassi. I live in Carol Stream, IL in the USA. My wife Elise and I are parishioners at Corpus Christ Catholic Church. We have two adult daughters. One lives in Washington DC and the other attends Cornell University in New York state. My wife and I are both veterinarians, and my specialty is in animal behavior. I attended college and veterinary school in Illinois, where I met my wife who is from the Chicago area, and the rest is history! My hobbies include Racquetball, Off Road Motorcycle Riding, Hiking and Camping. I have never written reflections before and look forward to the opportunity to offer what little insight I have on the scriptures. But I have always felt that the scriptures can speak for themselves. My job is just to shine a little light on them for people who maybe don’t have the time to look into the readings deeply. I hope you enjoy and find value in my writings. I certainly am grateful for the opportunity.

Mary Ortwein recently graduated with a Masters of Pastoral Theology degree from Saint Meinrad School of Theology in the US. She is a former teacher, but currently serves as a licensed clinical therapist in a non-profit agency. For many years Mary went to Mass, but felt like her heart really wasn’t in it. God seemed far away and her faith was not very strong. However, by questioning her faith more deeply, she discovered “the joy of the Gospel” and the strength and support of the Catholic Church. Mary is now very active in her parish. She serves as a Eucharistic minister and the coordinator of her parish’s Respect Life Ministry, and is an active member of a parish prayer group. She is a widow and the mother of two adult children and grandmother to their children. She lives in Frankfort, Kentucky in the USA.

Steven MarshSteven Marsh

Despite being a professional writer and editor for over 15 years, Steven Marsh is more-or-less winging it when it comes to writing about matters of faith. Steven entered the church in 2005, and since then he’s been involved with various ministries, including Pre-Cana marriage prep for engaged couples, religious education for kindergarteners, and Stephen Ministry’s one-on-one caregiving. Steven lives in Indiana with his wife and son. Despite having read the entirety of the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, he’s still surprised at elements he rediscovers or reflects upon in new ways. The more Steven learns about the faith, the less he feels he knows; he’s keen to emphasize that any mistakes are his own.
